A few years ago we went on a Cruise to New Caledonia.
We had a great time there, enjoying the experience of being on a Cruise, looking at the breathtaking sights and spending time together as a family.
One night while on the Cruise we watched a movie called, Coco.
It is an animated movie about a boy named Miguel who dreams to become a musician despite his family’s ban on music. Miguel finds himself in the Land of Dead and then the story unfolds…
The movie talks about Dia De Los Muertos also known as the Day of Dead (it is similar to All Saints’ Day or All Souls’ Day), where family and friends remember and pray for their deceased loved ones.
I don’t want to give any spoilers so I won’t go into any more details but suffice it to say that it moved all of us and we still talk about it fondly.
Coco has a wonderful message for each one of us and I would highly recommend watching it with your children, or by yourself :).
You must be wondering why I am talking about this movie?
This movie has the same underlying meaning as the Hungry Ghost Month.
It is believed that during the Hungry Ghost Month, spirits are free to roam the earth realm.
The Hungry Ghost month is the 7th month in the Chinese Lunar Calendar.
This year it starts from 8th of August and goes till the 6th of September 2021.
The Hungry Ghost Day falls on the 22nd of August 2021.
There are a few things that each one of us should try and follow to stay safe in the Hungry Ghost month:
- Avoid getting married this month
- Avoid celebrating on a big scale
- Pregnant women, older generation as well as young children should take extra care of their health
- Avoid participating in dangerous activities
- Avoid swimming this month, especially at night
- Avoid starting a new business
- Pay more attention when you are driving
- Do more prayers
- Offer smoke or incense to your local spirits regularly, and ask for your and your family’s safety
I understand that this might seem a bit woo-woo to some people but if you do not believe in it, that’s ok. All you need to do is take extra care this month.
