‘Clutter Busting’
Guest post By Lauren Winzar
Clutter is anything out of place or in the way. It is unmade decisions standing between you and the life you want to live.
Sometimes we can let the clutter sneak past us.
We don’t notice the junk mail on the kitchen bench, the empty glass beside the bed, the socks that get pushed to the back of the drawer.
We know it’s there but we don’t really notice it because it’s just part of the landscape.
And most likely our family or guests wouldn’t think twice about these things either.
Who really cares about a few things out of place?
If you’re bothered you can pick those few things up right now and the problem is gone!
But what happens when the catalogues are joined by a few bills and bank statements, there are 3 or 4 glasses, cups and bottles by the bed, along with a small stack of books, and you can’t find the socks you want even though you can’t close your sock drawer?
Sometimes cutter is more complicated.
It could be gifts from loved ones that just ‘aren’t really you’, objects you’ve inherited, products you’ve bought or saved because you are totally going to use it one day or it could be useful, things that you worked really hard to get but that aren’t important to you anymore.
The list is endless and unique to you.
The key to combating clutter is in understanding. Understanding yourself, being conscious of your choices and mindful of your goals.
A very popular decluttering expert, Marie Kondo – author of several books including the bestseller “The life changing magic of tidying up” – encapsulates this idea by personifying objects and asking her followers to determine which objects ‘spark joy’ and, when discarding an item, thank it for its service.
Kondo’s approach compliments and perhaps inspired my philosophy of cultivating your space.
I’d like you to take a moment now to think about the life you want, the person you are and where you’re going.
Try to picture how you move about your day in the space you’re working on.
Take a bit longer if you like.
Write it down. Sketch it out.
Take a video of yourself talking about it and email it to me if you like!
This image will change as you learn more about yourself, as you grow into yourself.
And, that’s ok. It’s good! As the image changes, so should your surrounds.
Now that you have a better idea of where you’re going, you can approach your clutter with conviction. Like Michelangelo and his sculptures, you can chip away removing the pieces that are not contributing to the life you are creating for yourself:
My basic “How to declutter”:
1. Get set. Grab a donate box – any box or bag that you are happy to part with is fine, and a rubbish bin.
2. Choose your space. Make it as small as possible. Eg. Don’t start with the kitchen, start with the cutlery drawer. Don’t start with the office, start with one box or tray. The key here is bite size pieces!
3. Tip it out. Take everything out of the space. Everything.
4. Pick up each item. Ask yourself if this has a place in your life anymore. If so, where does it belong (where would you look for it first)?
5. Bin, Box or Back home. As you ask the above questions put the item in the appropriate place. Rubbish in the rubbish BIN, Donations in the donate BOX, and the items still worthy of a place in your life go BACK HOME to where you would look for them first.
6. Rinse and Repeat. Give yourself a pat on the back and keep going until you’ve finished with every item you tipped out. Then move on to the next bite sized chunk until you’re ready for a break.
7. Keep the momentum. Do not stop for a break midway through a space. This is why we go for the bite size chunks. If you stop midway you are more likely to get discouraged and overwhelmed. When you finish each chunk before stopping, you can go back and look at your great accomplishment and it will inspire you to carry on.
This is the basic system that I’ve found works for almost any space.
If you get stumped, take a few deep breaths and remind yourself of where you’re going.
If you are really struggling, there is likely more behind your clutter than just a few misplaced items collecting on each other.
Most of us could use a helping hand, to get through the tougher aspects of decluttering.
Because your clutter, or more specifically the reason behind your clutter, is never going to be exactly like anyone else’s, there is not one perfect solution to clutter.
I like to remind my clients that “one size might only fit one”, and if one method of decluttering or organising hasn’t worked for you we just need to find another way!
