The Feng Shui principles are usually the same for all buildings, be it a free standing house, an office space, a town house or an apartment.

But, there are a few additional things that you should keep in mind when looking at buying or renting an apartment.

Apartments are a part of a building and you should remember that the main entrance of the apartment building is considered to be the main door, not the individual entrance to your apartment.

So, if you are thinking of buying or renting an apartment, make sure it faces one of your good directions.

As you know, Feng Shui’s main focus is on energy.

Your four good directions bring good energy towards you and your four not-so-good directions bring not-so-good energy to you.

If you follow this simple rule while looking for an apartment, you will have good luck while living in that house/apartment.

You do have to remember that there are a lot of layers in Feng Shui and this (your good directions) happens to be just one of the many layers.

Or, if you already live in an apartment and are looking at improving its Feng Shui, you will have to first work out the main direction of the whole building and then look at your own apartment orientation and see if it is good for you. (This part can be a bit confusing to most people).

Once you have worked out the various directions and orientations, you can then start looking for any external Feng Shui threats.

External threats could be in the form of poison arrows coming from the neighbour’s roof, electrical poles, or buildings etc.

The easiest way to fix these problems is by placing something in front of it, to block it (or in other words bear the brunt of it).

It could be done by having a line of trees (if the threat is from a roof), a fence (if the threat is at a lower level), hanging a wind chime, hanging a Pa Kua mirror or just a mirror, to deflect the poison arrow.

Make sure there aren’t any roads going through the mid-level of the apartment building. This would happen in cases where the apartment has been built on a slope of a mountain or on undulating land, or when there are flyovers built near residential areas.

The shape of the apartment building should be regular. A regular shape ensures that there are no missing corners, hence no missing luck/aspirations for the residents.

Look out for large drains in the front of the house. If you do have large drains, they should ideally be covered so that they do not create problems for you.

Each apartment should get plenty of light during the day and should have shade as well.

Remember, balance is the key to living a happier and more fulfilling life.

Avoid buying the top most floor in a building. In Feng Shui a lot of stress is laid on having someone to support you throughout your life.

When you live on the top most floor of a building, you will lack support in your life unless there is another, higher building behind you.

Continuing with the support theme, it is always better to have higher ground behind the house, as this ensures support in your life at all times.

Once you have checked and fixed the external issues, if any, you can then move on to fixing the internal Feng Shui of your apartment.

I will share some tips for the inside of apartments in my next post.

A very Happy Diwali to all of you.

I hope you enjoy lots of sweet times with your friends and family during this festive season ???.

Much love.
