You know, in all my years of practicing Feng Shui, whenever I asked someone if they knew what Feng Shui was, the standard answer has been, ‘Oh, it has something to do with the placement of furniture.’
This is correct to a large extent, but there is so much more to Feng Shui than just placing the furniture correctly.
I will not go into the details of all the layers of Feng Shui here, but suffice it to say that the placement of furniture is just the tip of the Feng Shui iceberg ;).
Before we look at the kind of furniture you could use in your home let me remind you that when you apply Feng Shui you should use your personal style and creativity while keeping the Feng Shui principles and taboos in the back of your mind.
It is very easy to incorporate the principles of Feng Shui with your personal style and that is what I personally feel brings best results.
Once you know what to look out for or what not to have in your personal space, you can let your creativity and personal style do the rest.
And then you will have a space that you will love spending time in and your friends and family will love it too.

The best thing about Feng Shui is that it is very versatile.
You can seamlessly blend it with your decor and no one could ever guess that you had actually applied or used Feng Shui.
Let’s have a look at what all you need to be aware of, while setting up your formal lounge area as well as the informal sitting room.
Choosing furniture for the room:
- When looking at buying furniture, it is always a good idea to buy new pieces rather than going for antique, second hand or hand-me-down furniture.
The reason behind this is simple. Every object or piece of furniture accumulates energy of the owner over time. When you buy old furniture it will come with the energy of its owner and you do not want to inherit their stale energy. You should definitely avoid buying antique beds and couches.
Style of furniture:
- When buying furniture make sure they do not have sharp edges or corners. Look for pieces which have rounded or smooth edges.
- Avoid really big and heavy pieces of furniture, especially if you have a small space.
- It is better to have cabinets with doors rather than open shelves.
- Avoid furniture with diamond shapes or crosses on it. These shapes tend to send out negative energy towards the person sitting in front of it all the time.
- Do not display fierce looking animals or weapons on your furniture.
Arrangement of furniture:
- The rule of thumb when placing furniture in any room is that it should not block the flow of energy in that space.
- Avoid having big and bulky table or cabinet near the entrance of your home.
- Make sure that the furniture near the main door is not sending out negative energy, in the form of pointed edges.
- Arrange the layout of sofas in such a manner that it forms a regular shape of either a square or a rectangle.
- Avoid placing the furniture in a manner that it creates an L or U shape. These shapes suggest a missing corner and hence something missing from your life.
- Fix the irregular shape of the sofas by adding side tables or chairs to the configuration and hence creating a regular shape. The television cabinet can also be used to regularise the shape.
- Another shape which is considered really auspicious is the octagon. The Pa Kua is also an eight sided octagon, and this shape can be used in the lounge room as well as in the dining room. This shape brings good relationships and networking luck with it too.
- It is a good idea to place a glass and wood coffee table in the middle of the room too.
- If you have big wall to wall cabinets or bookshelves then make sure they are secured properly and are next to a wall. Free floating shelves can be a safety hazard and can send out negative energy to the residents too.
Feng Shui tends to follow some basic principles and once you understand them you can apply it in your every day life very easily.
When you keep these Feng Shui principles in mind while out shopping for furniture,
“You not only create a space which feels & looks beautiful and inspires you, you create a space which works silently in the background to create a better life for you as well.”
It is also a good idea to move your furniture around on a regular basis. If you are happy with the current arrangement and feel that you do not want to or cannot move the furniture, then just move them out to give the area behind it a good clean and then place them back where it was.
The idea is to re-energise every corner of the room and lift the energy of the house.
Good Feng Shui is created when you keep you space neat and tidy. Add some music and fresh flowers to the mix and you will feel like dancing too 😉
Have fun rearranging your furniture 🙂
